I'm looking for any assistance you guys may be able to provide.  I've been using Power Query for almost a year with for the most part no issues.  I'm on using Office 2016 now and it's been working great.  Last week all of the sudden now I'm no longer able to establish a connection on my PC.  Also, I can't create a new query either.  This is my work computer.  Other computers I log into at work I can use Power Query as it was designed to be used.  Our IT person ran a diagnostics on office and that didn't do any good.  Today he uninstalled and re-installed MS Office.  That didn't work either.  When I click to refresh my queries it just sits and spins trying to establish a connection.  The same for a new query also.  When I click for the "Data Source" setting icon excel crashes.  Again, this is just on my machine.  Looking for any ideas to check.  I've built too many good querys that make my life so much easier and I would hate to lose this tool to be able to use at work.  I've clicked on many things and can't figure out why it cannot find the data source.  I would appreciate any assistance.

Thank You,

GaryFrown

Hi Gary,

That sounds awful and frustrating no doubt. I've not heard of this issue before, but I wonder if an add-in, maybe in Excel or anther app on your PC is interfering with Power Query. Try closing everything on your PC other than Excel. It may also be anti-virus software causing the problem, so you could try disabling that once you've closed all the other apps.

Hope that helps.

Hi Gary,

You can try to open Excel in Safe Mode, this will not load any add-in, but power query will still be functional if it's excel 2016 and not the 2010-2013-add-in version.

To open Excel in Safe Mode, close any open excel files first, then double click on the Excel shortcut (not on a file)  with CTRL key pressed. You will receive a message asking if you want to open excel in safe mode, click yes, then use File -Open to open the file with the problem. If it works with excel in safe mode, then disable the add-ins one by one until you find the source of the problem.

Thank You both for your reply.  I will try these two options when I get into work.

Well all recommendations have failed so far.  IT guys next step is to re-image the computer.  That will hopefully be the ticket.  It would be nice to know what happened for this to occur.  If I knew maybe I could prevent it in the future.

You can also try a clean re-installation of office package, this will remove any remaining registry entries.

(see Option 2, completely uninstall office with the uninstall support tool)

Just a quick update to close this out.  The end result is I ended up with a new computer.  Office install didn't work.  IT could have re-imaged computer but decided in just issue a new one.  It would have been nice to find out what caused this issue so i can try prevent it if possible from happening again.

Glad you are up and running again, Gary. I agree, it's a shame you couldn't get to the bottom of it.
