Hello Instructors,
Hope all is well with you. I am not quite sure if this question should have been posted here or another forum, but as Power Query is part of the proposed solutions, I thought I should post here.
I have a challenge in preparing all financial matters of my organization based on the manual Excel processes and here is the details of my case.
I am a financial planning and analysis manager for a non-for-profit organization based in Somalia. My organization receives income in the form of donations from government, UN and other donors globally. Our NGO has been using Excel as the financial tool for preparing budgets, forecasts, variance analysis, reporting and all other financial transactions are based on Excel.
During annual forecasting periods, our finance team struggle a lot and work long hours due to the manual copy-paste Excel-based processes. Currently, I am exploring options to create an automated process that is prepared in-house such that the manual Excel processes can be reduced or even removed. I want to study whatever tool that may help in automating our financial planning and analysis processes and then apply such knowledge in our organization. I am considering using one of the following tools to spend time in studying and then applying this knowledge to automate our business processes.
I am having difficulties to decide which tool to select. Among the available tools i am considering include Power Automate, Power Query, Python, SQL, VBA and R or similar tools. I am not quite sure which tool best suits to my needs as i have limited knowledge in all those software but i am ready to learn and apply.
Your advise and guidance on this is highly appreciated.
Best,
Mohamed
Hi Mohamed,
100% yes, Power Query can automate the laborious copying and pasting processes, as well as other typical data gathering and cleaning tasks, and is going to be far easier and quicker to implement than any of the alternatives you describe.
Power Query is solely designed by Microsoft to automate the gathering and cleaning of data from Excel, csv/text, databases, web, pdfs etc. While these other tools (except SQL) can also do some gathering and cleaning, they all require coding skills and will be more cumbersome to implement. Power Query is predominantly point and click and you can be up and running with it very fast.
I'm confident using Power Query for your current processes will be life changing, and I am not exaggerating.

Hi Mynda,
Thank you so much for your guidance and insights on this. Much appreciated. I started using Power Query for certain processes last year and it was so helpful requiring button clicks without deeper knowledge of the M language or the technical part of it.
I will consider this as I move forward.
Thank You,
Mohamed
