Dear Mynda,

I have created my power query queries & rolled up tables from raw tables in excel. But i need to now transfer my dashboard from excel to Power BI Desktop.

Is there a way i can transfer my complete data model (created in power pivot) & tables created by power query into power BI desktop without having to work on it again?

Any help would be great!

Thanks

Hi Shantanu,

Congratulations on your progress!

Yes, you can use the Export workbook data to Power BI tool. See session 8.04 of the Power BI course. That said, if you plan to refresh the data it would be better to build it from scratch in Power BI. You can copy and paste the queries into Power BI and then do the same for the measures. Unless your model is huge, it shouldn't take too long.

Thank you Mynda for your response. I tried what you suggested & the data model with all the measures gets imported to Power BI.

What I have not understood is your response on starting from scratch if I need to refresh it.

I did some changes in my original files to see if the changes gets highlighted when I refresh the power BI data model & thankfully it did work. Do you anticipate any problems in the refresh when we copy the data model & the power Query queries from excel to Power BI?

Thanks a lot

Hi Shantanu,

It depends...If you loaded your data into Power BI via Excel file tab > Publish > Upload your workbook to Power BI then Power BI retains dependency on the Excel workbook. Whereas if you chose the 'Export workbook data to Power BI' or via Power BI File tab > Import > Excel Workbook Contents, then the queries and data model are exported to Power BI and there is no remaining dependency on the Excel file. In these latter cases it should refresh without an issue, although you will still need a gateway if the files are on your PC or network drive i.e. not OneDrive.
