I tried to export my connection file however it wasn't an option in my Excel 2016. Is there a specific setting required or is there another way to save the connection file?

Hi John,
You need a version of Excel with this feature. You can try updating Excel 2016 as some Power Query updates are provided, I'm just not sure if this will be one of them.
If not, an alternative is to create the query in an Excel file that you can use as a template that you can share/reuse.
