I loaded a non table Excel file from a workbook.  I did not get the double arrows in the Binary column and I was not able add a custom column.  This file was sent to me from Excel 360 and I am on Excel 2010.  Could this be the reason?

Hi David,

Great to have you use the forum.

Please tell me which menu you used, because there isn't one called 'From a Workbook' so I can't tell if you took the From File > From Excel or From File > From Folder path.

The From File > From Excel path doesn't have a binary column, whereas the From File > From Folder does.

Session 2.02 shows you how to load data from an Excel file where it isn't in a Table.

Also, I assume the file is now saved on your PC or local network, so the original source being Excel 365 (I presume you mean 365 not 360) wouldn't matter, nor would Excel 2010 make any difference.

Cheers,

Mynda

I went From File > Folder path.  The first dialog box showed Binary with no arrows followed by File Name, Extension, etc.  When I clicked load

the binary column was gone and the first column was Cop of file name, extension, etc.

I will review 2.02 again.

Best

David

Using the address on the email I get my post.  However if I use the Forum > Power Query the first post is fill down, posted 3 weeks ago.  Why am I not able to see my post using this method?  Is there a video on the Forum?

I looked at 2.02 and used From File > From Excel and this worked fine.  But wonder why I was not able to load from folder.

Best

David

Hi David,

The forum will show the posts in descending order based on the most recent post or reply. If the one at the top was from 3 weeks ago then it must have had a recent reply.

You can find your posts by going to your profile and choosing "List topics you started".

In tutorial 2.05 I deal with importing Excel workbooks from a folder where the data is not in a table. The first part of the video deals with text files from a folder and the second part deals with Excel workbooks. The process is different. For an Excel workbook you don't expand the binary.

Let me know if you get stuck.

Mynda
