Bringing in Data Files from Folder

I'm having trouble bringing in data from a folder. I created a folder that contains files of branch data for various month (each file is a different month's worth of data). The columns are all identical, table format, and errors removed. I've watched video 2.05 From Folder, but I must be doing something wrong. I click on From File..., Folder, browse to my folder. The user window sees the files and then I click Edit to open the Power Query window.

When I click on the double arrows though instead of seeing the data I get an error ... DataFormat.Error: The input couldn't be recognized as a valid Excel document. Details: Binary

The files are not large, about 15 x 15 tables, approximately 12 separate files.

We're pulling data from another software reporting source, though it does export into an .xlsx file. Thought that might be part of the problem so I created three blank test workbooks, put one simple 2 x 5 table in each file, and then tried to load these, but I got the same error, but with different details.

I've looked on various forums but haven't found an answer that works for me yet, but one person mentioned some similar issues where the solution was to uninstall the add in (I'm using 2013), and reinstall. Do you think there is something I'm doing wrong as far as bringing in the files, or should I just uninstall and reinstall the Power Query add-in?

I've also been having trouble saving files with Power Pivot too. I get a lot of errors when I go to save the file (from Excel window), and when I re-open them the columns headers are there but the data is lost. I'm sure these types of questions about errors are difficult to answer remotely but I just wanted to see if you have any suggestions.

Thank you for your time,

Christopher

I went ahead and uninstalled Power Pivot and Query just to make sure that wasn't the issue, I re-installed both. I'm getting the same DataFormat error though. I can bring up the tables individually, but not as a group through the Folder option. Just FYI...

Thanks,

Christopher

I figured out what I was doing wrong. Sorry to make you read the previous submissions. I got in a hurry and missed a crucial step. I had been working with txt files earlier and when I started working with the Excel workbooks I forgot to add the custom column. Frustrating, but I guess the good part is that I spent enough time on this today trying to figure it out that I'll remember what I did wrong and not make the mistake in the future. Guess that's part of learning.

Thanks,

Christopher
