I have been trying to add an excel table from an external workbook to my data model but the Table Import Wizard does not recognize any excel tables in the workbook. Any ideas why?

Ideally, you should be using Power Query to import your data to Power Pivot. I trust you won't have any issues if you use the Data tab > Get Data > From File path.

Mynda, thanks. But the steps I am following are based on your Powerpivot lesson. Are saying that is no longer possible to add a table from an external workbook from the data model? It seems odd that Microsoft would show the option. And it does indeed work fine using Power Query.
I teach that method in my Power Pivot lessons because this is a standalone course (i.e. doesn't cover Power Query). However, the best/recommended way to get data into Power Pivot is with Power Query.
I am still able to import external Excel files via the Power Pivot dialog, so I suspect it's an issue with your file. Perhaps the file is open when you're trying to import it?
