Good morning Mynda,

I am excited to have finally enrolled in the Power Pivot course but so far, I have a question and an observation.

1. The question is how can I add a linked table to the data model in Excel 2016?

2. I observed that when I typed in the column references it made reference to the work sheet in the formula in excel 2016 but the worksheets were not referenced in your demonstration using excel 2013.

Note: I have attached some screenshots for clarity.

Thank you.

Ibrahim.

Hi Ibrahim,

In Excel 2016 you click the' Add to Data Model' button on the Power Pivot tab. It creates a linked table, although it doesn't have the link symbol.

In regards to your second question, I'm not sure what you mean or what tutorial number you're referring to and the screenshots didn't get attached. Please post your second question again, and this time please post it under the 'Course Members Only' Power Pivot forum, which you'll find below the public forums, which is where this post is.

Thanks,

Mynda

Hi Ibrahim,

Thanks for the screenshots. What you're looking at is the Power Pivot model in Excel 2016. Those references in the formula are to the Table and columns in Power Pivot, not the Excel worksheet.  The first image is the Power Pivot model tabs. The second image is the Power Pivot model formula bar.

The only difference is in Excel 2016 the link symbol isn't displayed in the Power Pivot tabs like it is in earlier versions of Excel, but it's still a linked table.

Mynda,

I also have a question about PPivot in 2016 regarding linked tables.  I read above that the linked symbol does not appear.  But there also appears to be no Linked Tab that has options for the linked tables.  I looked on the other tabs but could not find the functions.  Could you please advise.  Thanks

Hi Linda,

In Excel 2016 they removed the Link icon from the 'Add to Data Model' icon.

When you load data to Power Pivot from a table using the 'Add to Data Model' icon on the Power Pivot tab of the ribbon you are still 'linking' to the source data and can refresh it by clicking the Table refresh in the Power Pivot window, or by refreshing the PivotTable that uses a field from the Table in the data model/Power Pivot.

Background: Microsoft changed the way the data from a table is loaded to Power Pivot to improve stability, hence the removal of the 'link' icon and terminology, but essentially the 'Add to Data Model' icon still loads data from an Excel Table and retains a connection to the source so it can be refreshed.
