Power Pivot Import Error

Power Pivot was working fine and I was going along nicely in my training course.

All of a sudden I am getting the following error message:

"Failed to connect to the server.  Reason: Attempted to read or write protected memory.  THis is often an indication that other memory is corrupt"

Now I originally tried this with some data of my own as I was playing around with PowerPivot.  It kept happening so I tried the MOTH files and I still get the same error message.

Does anyone have any ideas?

Hi Toby,

I did some searches on Google and there seems to be a plethora of possible causes. Without knowing more about your system it's difficult to diagnose, but I recommend you do a Google search with this query:

power pivot Failed to connect to the server "Attempted to read or write protected memory.  THis is often an indication that other memory is corrupt"

And see if any of the results sound like your scenario.

Based on the results I read it sounds like there is a problem with your PC configuration, some conflicting software installed, or a possible repair required to your OS.

Sorry I can't be more helpful.

Hi Mynda,

Thanks for for this.  Yes, I suspect you are right as we are moving to a Microsoft 2016 environment.  So I have both Excel 2013 and Excel 2016 on my computer.  I will investigate further but this has only happened today and I've had both softwares on my machine for a couple of weeks now without too much drama.

Do you know if Power Pivot is available for Excel 2016?  My company's IT department seems to think not.

Thanks,

Toby

Hi Toby,

It is well known among the Excel MVP community that running Excel 2013 and 2016 side by side can lead to major problems. I have installed Excel 2016 on a separate PC for that very reason. Some have reported success, but you have to install it the right way and I'm not sure what that is!

Power Pivot is available in some versions of Excel 2016; namely Office Professional Plus, Office 365 Professional Plus, or in the standalone edition of Excel 2016. You have to enable the COM add-in if you have one of those versions.

Thanks Mynda.  My colleagues and I have found Excel 2016 'buggy' regardless of whether Excel 2013 is installed or not.

IT department are going to do a full re-installation tonight and apparently we do have Power Pivot in Excel 2016 available (contrary to what I was told earlier).

Hy Toby,

You should perform a clean reinstallation for office, there is a cleanup tool from Microsoft: Uninstall-Office-2016-Office-2013-or-Office-365-from-a-PC

Also it might help to run a registry cleaner, to remove any obsolete keys from old installations, that may affect the new installation.

I also had problems, with 2013 and 2016.

Cheers,

Catalin

Thanks Catalin for these tips.

I have arrived back to work to find Excel 2013 gone from my machine but no Power Pivot on Excel 2016.

Looks like a day of angst with the IT department.
