Hi, I have just installed latest udates to Office 365. Following the Power Pivot course I have now got stuck when trying to link to an Excel file (pp3_Products.xlsx 32bit).

I am using the post 2016 Onwards files but Excel just hangs (I've had it running for over an hour trying to connect to the file). No luck just revoving disc.

Has anyone else experienced this and, if so, is there a remedy?

Regards,

Colin

Hi Colin,

See my response below to your help desk question on the same topic. In future, please post to one place. The forum is good for 'how to' questions and the help desk is best for technical issues with our site or the training material. This question is probably ok for either place, but not both 🙂

I've moved this post to our Power Pivot course members group, which gets priority responses.

Hi Colin,

What version of Office 365 do you have? I'm running version 1905 build 11617.20002 and they open fine for me. I expect you're on an earlier build as I'm on the Office Insider channel, which gets releases early. It'd be good to know what channel you're on. You'll find all this info on the File > Account tab.

Have you tried rebooting?

Have you tried to get the data with Power Query and then load to Power Pivot?

Hi Mynda,

Thanks for the reply and advice.

I am running Version 1904 (Buid 11601.20144) - it tells me that this is the latest version.

I have tried practically everything to load the file including moving it to the root drive C:

This has only happened since I updated Office 365 last week. I was revisiting the course and thought I'd re-do parts of it. I got as far as linking to a table and linking to the Access database but the next step - linking to another Excel file - fails every time.

In the past I have managed to do this without a problem.

Hi Colin,

Is the pp3_Products.xlsx file closed? Power Query can only get data from closed files.

Also, have you tried getting data from any other Excel files. I wonder if this is all Excel files or just the course file.

Hi,

Yes. The file is closed. I have tried saving a Power Query table and that doesn't load either and it appears to be any external Excel file even the simplest spreadsheet with just a couple of rows won't load.

Hi Colin,

Try to Repair your office installation.

If this still does not fix the problem, try a clean office re-installation.

Hi Catalin,

Thanks for the reply.

No. That doesn't work either. When I click n the file name to load (in this case pp3_products.xlsx) it immediately goes into non responding mode. After 30 seconds or so the Power Pivot Window opens to show the link to the file iin its folder but I can do nothing - can't click Open, can't cancel - nothing.

It must be something with the install of Excel you have. What update channel are you on? Go to File tab > Account. Under the version number it will say something like:

Monthly or Deferred or Monthly Targeted etc.

I bet you did not tried a clean reinstall 🙂

That should solve any problems.

See this article, Option 2 - Completely uninstall Office with the uninstall support tool. After that, install office again.

Hi both,

Thanks for taking an interest.

No. I've tried Repair, Advanced Repair, Uninstall Option 1, Uninstall Option 2 and it still will not respond.

I have version 1904 11601.20144 and on Monthly Channel (Targeted),

...however I have managed to get it to work by pasting the file path rather than using the browse to option in the Table Import Wizard dialog.

I have no idea why the latter should not have worked.

It's odd indeed, Colin, but at least you have a workaround for now. Hopefully next month's update will fix it.

And the next problem. When I try to import the text file for the next lesson it does not split the text into columns. Even when I tell it to use tab separated before I browse to the file.

Steps are Open Power Pivot window>Manage>Home>From Other Sources>Text File>Next>Column Separator(Tab)>Use first row as column headers>Browse to file.

It then brings it in (unseparated) and I have to click Use first row as column again to get that to show but the text is still unseparated.

I can see that the text file is tab separated if I open it but it won't bring it in as tab separated but concatentates the Order ID and Status.

Hi Colin,

Not much we can do to help as it seems your install of Excel has bugs. Are you able to use a different PC, or perhaps change your update channel to 'deferred' to roll back to an earlier version that is more stable until such time as the next monthly update is available?
