Hey Mynda

A general question on Date Tables - so say I have one report with Data 01/7/10 - 31/10/15 which has start of month dates of 01/mm/yy for each month and say the second report has monthly data again with start of month dates is 01/01/08 - 01/05/13 (I actually have this problem in some legacy data so not trying to be difficult Embarassed).   So for where I want to use both tables in a chart (and actually Power BI if its the same principle??) would a daily Date Table of 01/01/08 to 01/10/15 work for the overlap in period?   OK I could harmonise the two tables with a common date range in some new tables I guess but I am wondering if 2 tables with the inconsistent date range might work for the period where there the periods are common.

In the lesson on date tables you say no unnecessary dates - so do you mean I could not say set up the above daily Date Table as 01/01/08 to 31/12/15 I must set it up for days no earlier or not even one day longer than what ever the right answer is above and then update as needed when new data presents?  Is this the same for Power BI?

thanks

John

Hi John,

Great question. Your date table should be from 1/1/08 through to 31/12/15 i.e. it must cover all periods and it you want to use Time Intelligence functions then it should be for whole calendar years (from 1 Jan to 31 Dec). Otherwise, just to 31/10/15 would be ok.
