dear all,

can someone help me? i trying to add two figures together for a desired result of 1 million dollars. The two figures are devised using the Future value formulae (with interest rate, pner, pmt, pv). Let assume figure one is A and figure 2 is B. I am trying to add A and B to achieve 1million dollars by varying the functions within the FV forumale.

can it be done ? see attached

Hi Albert,

Goal Seek can alter one value at a time to achieve your desired result. It can't alter all variables; i.e. rate, nper, pmt and PV, and it wouldn't make sense to.

For example, would you be happy if it just altered the rate? I mean it might find a rate that's not achievable in reality. Or what if it altered the PV? Again, that might not be achievable.

There are too many variables and no rules around what limits are acceptable, nor could Goal Seek handle multiple variables anyway.

So, let's say you average the inputs for A & B's rate and nper, and then sum the Pmt and PV so your formula is:

=PV(0.27%,90,-1700,-366000)

=$639,450.83

You could use Goal Seek to find the optimal Pmt to reach $1M.

It returns:

=FV(0.27%,90,-5244.43,-366000)

Or the optimal PV:

=FV(0.27%,90,-1700,-648861.054)

Or the optimal Rate:

=FV(0.83%,90,-1700,-366000)

Or the optimal Nper:

=FV(0.27%,182.74,-1700,-366000)

More on Goal Seek here.
