Been struggling with making a Excel formula work, I'm using Excel 2007.

In sheet Marriages, I have a column Surname, there are 17 different spellings of McClellan, I need each to have a unique identifier from sheet FF# using the identifier only once per name spelling.

Formula is in sheet Marriages - Column K (K2).

Hope someone can help.

Much thanks!

Tried to upload and couldn't make it small enough for the limit, so here is a link on my GDrive. Great McClellan Database.xlsx

hope it works.

Thanks for taking a look.

Hello Jay,

Not sure if this is what you want, it is how I understood it anyway. Please see attached sample.
I created a helper column to count each spelling version and is using that number added with one to get correct row line in the HLOOKUP formula.

Hello Anders

Wow, thank you, that worked like a charm, never thought of using a Helper to count each first.

I changed on thing sheet 2 was FF# but I read # could lead to problems, changed it to FFN, I see you put in single quotes and it worked fine,

but I removed quotes and #, changed to FFN added helper column and it worked great. I was stumped for a few days, now I can move on to converting it to mySQL database.

Hello Jay,

I’m glad I could help. Good luck with your work, as a geneaologoist myself it looked like you have dugged up a lot of hard found data.
