I have two lots of data that have the same x and y axis labels but one is for all respondents of a survey (chart 1) and one is for only the respondents who selected No to a specific question (chart 2). I have created a clustered column chart for each data set but now I would like to superimpose chart 2 onto chart 1. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Hi Karen,

It's risky superimposing charts on top of one another because charts typically automatically scale the axes to suit the data, which could result in the charts having different scales.

I recommend you fix the min and max of each chart's axes. Then you can hide the axes on the top chart and set the chart area fill to 'none'. That way the bottom chart's labels show through to the top chart.

I hope that points you in the right direction. If you get stuck, please upload your sample Excel file so we can help you further.

Thank you Mynda. I am only new to charting so just trying to get my head around a few things.

I have re-looked at it and decided it might be best if I just use a Combo Chart so I have cleaned the data to get the information I want but now I am wanting to change the y axis values/labels to not be the nr of respondents but instead the actual series.

I have attached an example of what I am talking about. Basically I want to compare the answers between the yes respondents and the no respondents (the no answers are suffixed with "No" in the columns (1No-5No) with the y axis being 1-5 responses and the secondary axis being the 1No-5No responses as a line graph.

Am I totally on the wrong track? Thank goodness I am coming along to the Excel Summit at the end of the month...hahaha!!

Thanks.

Hi Karen,

Thanks for sharing your file. I would use a different chart. Please read through this tutorial on charting survey data for some ideas.

See you at the Summit 🙂
